Our Practice Manager:

Our Practice Manager in our Merthyr practice is Gemma Toomey. Gemma joined the Optical Centre part time when she was only 15, and became a full time Optical Assistant in September 2009. Gemma is currently working as both our Practice Manager and Dispenser in our Merthyr Tydfil practice. Gemma was born in Merthyr Tydfil and continues to live in the area with her two children. Gemma is a friendly and familiar face to all our patients and is happy to assist you with all of your eyecare needs. As our dispenser Gemma will be able to assist you with any questions or queries you have about the frames and lenses we stock, and will be able to advise you on the best fit for you.

Practice History:

Mansur Megji (the current owner’s father) started working as an optometrist at the top of the town in Merthyr in 1966, and then purchased the practice 2 years later when the owner retired. Over the next 25 years the focus of the town moved towards the lower end of the High Street and the practice also moved to this area. In 1990 Mr. Megji’s son (Shiraz) qualified as an Optometrist and purchased the business in 2005 after his father’s retirement. In 2019 Shiraz’s son Jos qualified as an Optometrist and has been working for the company since then. Shiraz’ wife Sharon and daughter Keisha both work for the company as the Company Secretary and Business Manager, and Shiraz’ niece Gemma is also the Practice Manager - so as you can see this is definitely a family-run business.

We offer a full range of eye care services in Merthyr Tydfil including emergency appointments, Low Vision examinations, Contact Lens Fittings, Home Visits, OCT scans, Visual Field tests and a great choice of eyewear for both adults and children. We are always accepting new patients!

The focus of the Company is to provide the highest levels of eyecare to our local population, offering the highest levels of customer service provided by highly skilled people who live within the areas where our practices are located. We are a completely independent Company with a team of 22 staff all aiming to provide state of the art eyecare in a caring and relaxed manner. We’ve been offering OCT scans to our patients for over 7 years, and we have Optometrists with extra qualifications in Low Vision, Medical Retina, Glaucoma, Independent Prescribing, Myopia Management, and WECS/EHEW acute & emergency eyecare. We are also working with our local Hospital Eyecare Service to offer Glaucoma follow up examinations and Retinal Examinations for those patients currently under the hospital. This means we provide appointments closer to home, in a timely manner and easing the burden on the hospital services.

Our practice was also selected by the Health Board to remain open through the initial Covid lockdown offering acute/emergency eyecare to patients & key workers, as well as going to people’s homes to collect, repair & replace broken spectacles and to deliver contact lenses.
